Field Diary vol.12 -Harvest Potatoes-

Hi.

Thank you for visiting Agri Step.

Finally, I harvested potatoes in this time.

Spring planted potatoes are basically harvested until rainy season.

Otherwise, they will get something disease.
 

Harvest Potatoes

I didn’t use any machinery so I pulled out the potatoes gently and picked potatoes which were left in the land.

If you use shovel, you should be careful. Otherwise, you damage it.

I think I did well.

Although I’m glad to grow good looks potatoes, I learned how difficult it grew as farmer.

I don’t need to care about the looks of them because I will eat but the farmers have to produce to market so “the looks” is really important especially Japan.

My potatoes got 5 types of disease in this season so I will introduce them next.
 

Feature of Disease

	Secondary Growth *I’m not sure this original name in English Case：The temperature reach around 30℃ when potatoes are in soil. It cause secondary growth.	Measure:Change the fertilization because there is the possibility of heavy nitrogen fertilization. Thorough mulching. Make the land have best water holding capacity and soil temperature.
	Green Potatoes Case： Sun scald	Measure：Thorough mulching. Store it at a cool dark place.
	Lenticel spots Case：The land has much humidity.	Measure：Make the land have best water holding capacity.
	Malformed Potato Case：Secondary growth or Black bruise.	Measure：Sterilization of seeds
	Pest Case：Turnip moth or other moths	Measure：Pesticide *There are lots of turnip moths in west Japan.

I was great to learn Potato disease in this time.
